Background Music can perform automatic volume control to keep the music at a constant level – audible but never intrusive. The adjustment works very smoothly because Background Music 'looks' several seconds ahead and for instance starts turning the level down well before the lound refrain starts.

Following up is a multiband compressor that clips the edges of heavily piercing or rumbling sounds. You can adjust the amount of 'smoothing' applied to the music with the 'Ambientizer' control knob – from no intervening to strong leveling.

 
 
Multiple Rooms
If you add additional sound outputs to your Macintosh, Background Music can play different music through each of them. Each output has its own music schedule. In a hotel you might want different music styles for the bar, lobby and dining room. And the big news: a low-cost external USB '5.1 surround sound card' adds three separate stereo channels to your setup. A typical 4-room installation looks like this:
